When was the last time you prioritized play?
We let our kids play.
We let our pets play.
We watch people in TV shows, films, and social media play.
But what about you?
Yes, you—adult human who works so damn hard just to exist in this world.
When do you get to play?
When do you allow yourself to let your hair down and be free?
Free from the stress of your hard-earned job.
Free from all the responsibilities of bills, being a caregiver, parent, friend, and partner.
Free from constantly worrying about other people.
Give yourself the gift of play.
So your body can breathe.
So the heavy weight in your shoulders can dissipate.
So you can feel the pulse of electricity buzz through your body again.
Bella Baxter Gets It
I went to see Poor Things a few weeks ago and I was inspired by the main character, Bella Baxter (played by Emma Stone). She took on life’s adventures quite literally through the mind of a child. This allowed her to move with a sense of freedom that most of us dream of as adults.
It’s funny, when we’re children, we can’t wait to grow up. Then, we become adults and reminisce on the imaginative days of being a child—no responsibilities, creativity abound, and running through meadows with our imaginary friends.
Bella Baxter reminded me to stop taking life so damn seriously. Yes, I know…responsibilities don’t just disappear and I am still an adult after all. But that doesn’t mean I can’t allow myself to play.
Emma Stone’s curiously-driven character managed to find pleasure and play, even when she had no money. We often believe we’re only deserving of play once we’ve made ‘x’ amount of money or reached a certain level of success.
It is simply not true.
Pleasure and play are your birthrights. Life becomes so much brighter and lighter with play in it. Try it. I dare you.
Allowing yourself to play doesn’t mean you’re immature and have no boundaries.
Whoever told you that, is a liar. You get to make your own rules.
“I am Bella Baxter. I am a flawed, experimenting person. I seek outings and adventures. Bella’s so much to discover. And there is a world to enjoy, circumnavigate. It is the goal of all to progress, grow.”
