A Sensual Inventory
What did I see? This visual brain dump I created last night. I quite like the color palette. I also discovered a trick to help your body flow with whatever wants to come out and alchemizing that into physical art.
Instead of focusing on the visual sense (aka what it looks like or trying to get it perfect) focus on the felt sense. What does the medium feel like in my hands? What is the texture? How does it feel against the surface I’m drawing/painting/writing on? This immediately shifted the experience for me. You can also focus on a different sense, like sound—flowing with a song. Game changer.
What did I hear? I went to the Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame (phew, that’s a long one) to see the Billy Joel exhibition. Ahhh, Billy. He’s from Long Island and my family name is Joel, so I always used to get asked the question, “are you related to Billy Joel?” to which I sometimes replied, “why yes, he’s my uncle.”
He isn’t really but I did it for the plot.
Anyway, Billy Joel is kinda bad ass. He just decided he wanted to be a music star, started in a metal band, made a ton of hits, and has been rockin’ out for 5 decades. What a legend. This song nearly made me cry because it brought me back to my chorus singing days in high school.
What did I touch? My body. Touching our bodies with love (non-sexual or sexual) can help relieve stress, ground you in the present moment, and calm your nervous system. Place your hand on your heart and take a deep breath. Hey, isn’t that nice?
What did I smell? LUSH orange body scrub. This stuff is so Divine and smells like a burst of energy. LUSH is a great company that I don’t feel bad giving my money to. Definitely recommend trying their natural bath and body products. Especially this stuff.
What did I taste? Super tasty overnight oats. It’s been a while since I’ve made overnight oats but this recipe is particularly delicious. I usually add a little granola and fresh fruit on top. Et voilà! Try it here.
The Red Experience
On Tuesday I had a great chat with Daphny Lauren Bravo, the visionary behind The Red Experience, a one-of-a-kind Women’s Wellness Gala that gives back to YOU and our Long Island community. All proceeds go to Stony Brook Cancer Center. I’m so honored to be a part of this event and in a community of so many incredible women who value receiving as much as giving.
Listen to our chat, because around here we like to stimulate all the senses. We talk about what to expect at The Red Experience, the embodiment of giving/receiving, my red light portrait experience for the event, and the alchemy of art.
Receive the gifts of over 40 creative women on March 12th, 6:30-10:30pm at The Hamlet Country Club in Commack, NY.
Get your ticket or donate here to women in need and cancer research on Long Island.
